Eligibility Criteria
STEP mentors are primarily members of the faculty of The Ohio State University, as defined by University Faculty Rules (Chapter 3335-5-19, Faculty, Governance, and Committees). In recognition of the distinctive qualifications found across the university, staff members may be considered on a case-by-case basis when they demonstrate excellence aligned with the STEP mission.
To ensure mentors are well-prepared to support students in this capacity, the following eligibility criteria apply:
-
Employment Status: Must hold exempt status within the university system and reside in the state of Ohio, in compliance with institutional policy.
-
Academic or Professional Standing: Must hold a faculty appointment (Chapter 3335-5-19), preferably with a PhD or terminal degree in their discipline, or demonstrate equivalent professional expertise such as senior university leadership roles.
-
Engagement in Teaching or Student Success: Must be actively involved in the university’s teaching mission through formal instruction or senior leadership in a student success or academic program.
-
Mentoring Experience and Philosophy: Must demonstrate prior experience mentoring students and articulate a mentoring philosophy that aligns with the mission and values of STEP.
